The Foley Freeze wins Windsor-Essex Great Lakes Regional

Bishop Foley Catholic High School’s robotics team, known as The Foley Freeze, attended the FIRST Robotics Windsor-Essex Great Lakes Regional at the University of Windsor April 7-9th and returned home to the United States as Regional Champions. Bishop Foley Catholic was one of 53 teams playing FIRST STRONGHOLD, the game designed for the FIRST Robotics Competition for 2016. Foley’s team also received two judged awards at the competition, The Imagery Award in honor of Jack Kamen and The Engineering Excellence Award sponsored by Delphi. In addition, they were an honorable mention for the Industrial Safety Award. Their performance at this event earns them the right to compete at the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis, MO April 27-30th.

Foley’s robot placed 1st out of 52 teams from 3 countries at the end of qualification matches. They then partnered with two Ontario teams to form an international alliance that had playoff record of 6-1, securing the title of Regional Winner. This is Bishop Foley Catholic’s second Regional Championship title.

The Imagery Award in Honor of Jack Kamen celebrates attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance. Foley was recognized for their strong branding and team image. Their GearFlake logo and Glacial Splinter font created by Bishop Foley Catholic students are integrated into team uniforms, banners, and robot, helping to create an immediately identifiable team image.

The Excellence in Engineering Award sponsored by Delphi celebrates an elegant and advantageous machine feature. Foley was noted for their shooting mechanism used to score points both up close and from a distance, as well as their tank-tread drive train that easily crossed their opponent’s defenses on the field.
