After winning three district competitions during the 2017 season, The Foley Freeze finished up as a finalist in the Consumer’s Energy Division of the Michigan State Championships (MSC). During the competition, held the weekend of April 13-15, the team brought home a silver medal and was awarded the Innovation in Control Award. Sponsored by Rockwell Automation, the award was presented for Foley Freeze’s intuitive design of the control board and the automation functions of the robot. During the finals, the team was seeded as the first alliance with FRC 217 – ThunderChickens and FRC 4237 – Lance-A-Bots. The Freeze had a successful run leading up to the State Championship and was the only team in the state to win three district competitions. At the Gull Lake District, in addition to taking home a gold medal and winners banner, the team received the FCA Foundation Spirit Award. The team was picked by the seventh seeded alliance consisting of FRC 5623 – Robotic Rams and FRC 5675 – WiredCats. At the second competition, Troy District, the Freeze brought home a second gold medal and banner as well as the Quality Award sponsored by Motorola. They were seeded as the seventh seed alliance captain partnering with FRC 818 – Steel Armadillos and FRC 5460 – Strike Zone. At the final qualifying competition, Shepherd District, they again emerged as champions; seeded third and picked by the first alliance FRC 74 – Team CHAOS and picking FRC 6582 – Vestabots.
