The Foley Freeze competed this weekend at the Michigan State Championship, April 12 – April 14. There were 161 teams competing in four different divisions for the chance to compete at the World Championship in Detroit. FIRST Founder, Dean Kamen, FIRST President, Don Bossi, and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder were there and spoke to all the teams. In the pits, different companies and universities set up displays, offered free swag and even raffled off some high priced items. They created community areas that had couches for teams to work at and some large scale games for teams to play. During a lull in the action, our drive team played connect-four.
As for the performance aspect, the team was apart of the sixth seeded alliance. They finished in the semifinals to the second seed. The team ended up 69th in the state and qualified for the World Championship in Detroit. During this competition, they were also awarded the Quality Award. This award is given to teams that demonstrate robustness and quality, create a robot that can withstand the rigors of competition, and the machine was built with a detailed plan in mind. This is the third time in team history this award has been won. They will be competing next week at the Cobo Center in Detroit from Thursday, April 26 – Saturday, April 28.
