By Anne Schaller It was a big surprise to see the Star Wars droid R2D2 crash the kickoff for FIRST Robotics 2020 season. The Competition this year, named Infinite Recharge, been themed around Star Wars. This is the first competition to be working with Disney and Lucasfilm. The Saturday kickoff was broadcast live to nearly 100,000 high school students in 30 countries. The imagineers have been involved with FIRST for 20 years, and they are happy to make the collaboration official this year, said Emily Nerviani of Lucasfilm. In addition to R2D2 unveiling the game field, the rolling droid BB-8 was also featured in a video promoting the collaboration. It’s great to combine science fiction with real life science and technology, said Dean Kamen the founder of FIRST. Through Star Wars: Force For Change, was organization to“embolden and motivate the next generation of heroes and innovators”.
