The Foley Freeze Takes a Visit Over the Rainbow

BY MADDY KUBACKI

The Bishop Foley Theater Department recently pulled some students away from the build room to see the great and powerful Wizard of Oz in a whole other world! About 20 students in robotics were participating in the musical from being lead roles to being an assistant director.

The musical was performed at Bishop Foley on March 4th and 5th at 7 PM. Usually, Foley would host the musical at the Lamphere Theater, but Covid had once again affected another activity. Either way, the actors, actresses, and everyone behind the scenes had worked extremely hard to put this year’s musical on.

Students brought their organization and building skills learned from robotics to help with set pieces. Every year, students help build each of the different stage elements, and this year, helped with the backdrop.

Students experienced the real-world application of the skills they’ve acquired in robotics as they applied them to the stage activities and were still able to enjoy the things they like to do.

“Getting to play a major role on stage lets you experience the responsibility of being in the show, but also how much fun you can have, especially with a great cast, crew, and director,” Justin Cabrera, a freshman who played the Lion, mentioned.

Having the lights on him was a big shift from independently working in the build room to being on stage. Even with the shift, the quality of teamwork was a strong attribute as he rehearsed with his co-actors.

“I never thought I would end up on the stage as Toto for the musical,” Maddy Kubacki, a sophomore, explained. “Out of all the things, it was the least suspected, but I had fun no matter what. I had to manage my time best while doing the musical, especially with being at school every day.”

The members of the Foley Freeze had to manage their schedule best with robotics work time being right after rehearsal. Some of Maddy’s busy’s days would consist of school during the day then going to a rehearsal, bowling practice, and ending the night with robotics.

In each and every activity offered at Bishop Foley, every student is a single puzzle piece and by doing their part, they add to a much bigger picture than they could on their own.
